Types of turtles found in Maldives.

Did you know that five of seven species of turtles can be found in the Maldives?

The most common being is Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) and the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) they are often sighted living on the clear waters of the reef.




The Olive Ridley Turtles (Lepidochelys Olivacea) are sadly most often found after becoming trapped in drifting ghost fishing nets. The two species occasionally spotted are the Loggerhead (caretta caretta) and leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea).


Research shown that Hawksbills remain on their home reefs throughout the year. Only travels between the reefs less than 2 kilo meters apart. . Whereas Green turtle use multiple reefs for feeding.


Did you also know that the turtle facial profile pattern are as unique to each turtle just like the fingerprints in humans?


Scientists from Kelonia and Ifremer implemented photo identification method  is being used to identify and research about these turtles migration.
